NEW PLAYERS ARE VERY WELCOME TO ALL PARTS OF THE CLUB
History
South North was founded in 1864. The club was a founder member of the Tyneside Senior League winning the league in four successive years from 1906 to 1909. It moved to its present ground in Gosforth in 1892 when Northumberland entertained the touring Australians (losing by an innings). In 1923 the club members purchased the freehold to the ground for £5,500.
The club joined the newly-formed Northumberland League in 1934 and for 11 seasons between 1924 and 1934 was captained by George Harbottle. George remained a stawart of the club and was President from 1968 to his death in 1998 aged 104.
The post war period yielded the club's greatest successes, winning the Northumberland League seven times between 1947 and 1967 and again in 1988 and 1997 under the captaincies of Clive Goatman and Ian Gilthorpe respectively and with various cup trophies to adorn the club bar, including the Justsport Trophy in 1999. Thanks to sponsorship the club professional has also returned with the likes of David Townsend, Dewald Pretorius and Reon King.
Indeed, since its inception South North has been the Premier League's most successful club winning the league championship seven times in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011, the Banks Salver in 2000 and 2007 and the 2nd Division in 2004 and 2008. 2006 proved an extremely successful year with the 1st XI also winning the prestigious Cockspur Cup, claiming the title of best club side in Britain. The 1st XI added to this in 2008 by being crowned champions of the inaugural Cockspur 20/20 Cup at the finals day held at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff. In 2010, South North won the national knockout trophy and narrowly lost out on a second Cockspur Cup victory.
Our U13 section have reached the Nationals finals held at Oakham School in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and along with other junior sides, have also won many local leagues and cups to herald a new strength in depth at South North. Indeed, with over 400 junior cricketers, South North has assumed the cricket coaching role formerly provided by the city's schools and continues to produce quality cricketers.
